Choose Your Support: Orthotic or Insert

You are faced with dozens of choices every single day. Some choices are pretty small, like what you should have for breakfast or which show to watch in the evening. Other decisions are more life defining, like where you go to college and the friends that you keep. Still other decisions appear small, but can have a significant impact on your health and comfort in the future. Choosing orthotics—and what kind—falls into this last category.

Orthotics are small devices that you slip into your shoes to help you manage foot pain or address biomechanical deficiencies. There are two main types: custom orthotics and over-the-counter inserts. Both serve different purposes, and both have merits, depending on how you use them. Which kind you should choose for your feet really depends on why you need them.

In order to choose, you should know the differences between the two:

  • Custom Orthotics – These are prescription-based, specially-crafted insoles that are designed by a podiatrist to fit your unique feet. They are fabricated specifically to correct biomechanical issues or accommodate a foot problem.

  • Over-the-Counter Inserts – These are insoles you can pick up at a pharmacy. They are pre-fabricated according to general needs. They add an extra layer of support and cushioning in your shoes.

Over-the-counter inserts are good for simple foot discomfort. They add some cushion to your sole and can give your arch a little extra support. They are usually best for people who end up with sore feet, but don’t have foot issues that need more involved treatments.

Custom orthotics are best if you have an actual foot condition that causes you pain. These prescription devices can be adjusted to correct abnormal motions that make walking or other activities difficult and painful. If you have diabetes or are prone to ulcers, these can be customized to protect your sensitive feet.

Whether you choose custom orthotics or regular inserts is up to you, but we can help you to select the best option for your health and foot comfort. Our experts at Absolute Foot Care Specialists in Las Vegas are more than happy to assess and recommend which option would best suit your needs.
