Creative Tricks to Stop Foot Odor in Its Tracks

January has been National Creativity Month, a time to celebrate people who think outside the box to solve problems and create things. Creativity in problem-solving is a great skill for life, and it can even help with your foot health. For example, if you struggle with smelly feet, it may be time to look for some creative home remedies to stop foot odor in its tracks.

Foot odor is caused by an unpleasant cocktail of the sweat your feet produce mixed with the bacteria that live on your skin. The bacteria breaks down the sweat and releases an odor. The sweaty mixture gets absorbed by your socks and shoes, too. The stink is unpleasant and embarrassing for everyone—no one wants to smell it, much less be the culprit.

Fortunately, there are creative home remedies to help stop foot odor. Here are a few to try:

Scrub your feet – Use warm water and soap to wash your feet daily. Periodically scrub your feet either with a pumice stone or a sugar-alcohol paste. Don’t scrub your feet if you have diabetes.

Antiperspirant – Rub antiperspirant on your feet to help minimize sweating.

Tea soak – Soak bags of green tea in warm water for 10 minutes. Then soak your feet in the mixture. Green tea has natural antibacterial properties.

Vinegar water – Mix a half-cup of regular or apple-cider vinegar in a bucket of water. Soak your feet for 10 minutes, then wash them off and pat them dry. This kills bacteria.

Tea tree oil – Rub a few drops of tea tree oil into your clean feet both at night and in the morning, wearing fresh socks afterward to lock in the effects. This freshens and sanitizes skin.

Don’t forget to treat your shoes, too:

Wash and dry – If you can, wash your shoes. This eliminates the sweaty, germy build-up in the fabric. Then open them up and hang them out to dry.

Baking soda/baby powder – Shake baking soda or baby powder into your shoes to help absorb moisture and odor.
