6 Reasons Why You Have Desert Dry Feet

Deserts are characterized by dryness. Very little rain falls, and sometimes the air can be dry enough to feel like it’s sucking the moisture right out of you. In Las Vegas, we’re quite familiar with the feel of the desert, as the city is surrounded by it. Dryness, and the effects that come with it, are pretty normal. That doesn’t mean people enjoy the sensation of dried out skin, of course! Dry feet in particular can be uncomfortable. Living in arid places like this isn’t the only reason your feet may feel like part of the desert, however. Other factors can play a role in why feet dry out.

The skin on your feet is naturally drier than anywhere else on your body. Without the oil glands that make the rest of your body’s skin moist and flexible, your feet have to rely on their thousands of sweat glands to keep the skin from drying out. Unfortunately, this isn’t always sufficient. Outside factors can draw the moisture right out of your lower limbs and leave you with itchy, flaky, peeling, and even cracking skin.

Here are a few things that could be behind your dry feet:

  • Low Humidity – Dry air encourages the moisture on your feet to evaporate away. This is definitely an issue in Las Vegas’ desert climate!

  • Excessively Hot Showers – Water that’s too hot pulls the natural moisture from your skin.

  • Certain Soaps – Non-moisturizing soaps actually wash away your natural layers of moisturizer, leaving behind dry skin.

  • Time in the Sun – Like dry air, too much time in the sun evaporates any dampness.

  • Aging – Your sweat glands naturally become less active as you get older, limiting how much sweat ends up on the surface of your feet.

  • Preexisting Conditions – Health problems can impair your body’s ability to keep your skin moist. Diabetes, athlete’s foot, dermatitis, and other conditions can dry out your feet.

There are many possibilities for why feet dry out, especially in a dry, desert environment. You don’t have to just let your feet itch, flake, and crack, though! The right ointment, cream, or soaking treatment can do wonders for managing dry feet. Our team at Absolute Foot Care Specialists can help you address contributing health issues, too.
